How We Met

If you love something, let it go (and then circle back in 8 years).

In 2011, Kyle set out on a road trip across the country, seeking adventure and new experiences. A mutual friend suggested she reach out to Sam when she was passing through California—he might have a couch she could crash on for a night. Desperate for a real bed and some non-tent living, Kyle sent Sam a message introducing herself, sharing her journey, and asking if he'd want to meet up when she got to L.A. Adventure-loving Sam, who had never met Kyle before, said yes without hesitation. Not only did he agree to hang out, but he also generously offered her a spot to stay. They spent the day exploring L.A., laughing, and getting to know each other. But as quickly as their paths crossed, Kyle hit the road again—romance wasn’t on her itinerary, and there was so much more to see. Before leaving, she casually mentioned that she hoped to move to the West Coast someday, and maybe they'd meet again in the future. Over the next eight years, they kept in touch sporadically—just the occasional message or two. Kyle returned to Cincinnati to settle back into life, and Sam stayed on the West Coast, finishing art school and starting his career. For years, their lives took completely separate paths. Then came 2020. Amid the chaos of Covid, Kyle’s phone buzzed with a text from Sam. It had been years since they’d spoken, so his message came as a total surprise. “Did you ever make it out to California?” he asked. He added that if she was around, he’d love to catch up. Kyle replied that while she hadn’t moved yet, it was in the works, and she’d be heading West in a few months. Ever the gracious host, Sam mentioned he had a room available to rent in his house if she needed a place to stay. Though she wasn’t ready to commit to Santa Barbara just yet, she promised to let him know when she was in the area—and joked that she'd love to crash on his couch like old times. When Kyle eventually pulled up to Sam’s house in Santa Barbara, something clicked. Not only was the town incredible, but spending time with Sam felt as easy and fun as it had all those years ago. A lot had changed in eight years, but their chemistry had not. They spent the weekend riding motorcycles, swimming, and catching up. When it was time for Kyle to leave, neither of them wanted the weekend to end. As Kyle continued traveling around California and Arizona, Santa Barbara stayed on her mind—and so did Sam. She started looking for apartments online, realizing she couldn’t quite shake the feeling that something special was waiting for her back there. Soon enough, Kyle found an apartment in the mountains of Santa Barbara. Daily trips up and down the winding roads brought her to Sam’s house, where they spent their days exploring town, riding motorcycles, and sharing adventures. After a few months, Sam suggested she move in—for cheaper rent, less commuting, and because, well, they were falling in love. Fast forward a few years, and their journey brought them to Portland, OR, where they bought their first house, fell in love with the Pacific Northwest, and built a life full of motorcycle rides, snowboarding trips, and new adventures. Somewhere along the way, Sam proposed, and now they’re planning the ultimate adventure: a lifetime together. Oh, and about Sam’s dog, Philbert? Kyle can’t wait to officially become his fur-ever mom. Looks like Kyle will be crashing on Sam’s couch for a little while longer.
