Alexa and Gary met at a pre-law school orientation BBQ in downtown Austin. They were in the same small section and attended the event to meet the other 20 students with whom they would spend what was notoriously the worst year of law school. Gary, who had stepped off a plane from California two days earlier, showed up late, and was trying to figure out how he would survive the next few summers in Texas. Alexa, who had showed up early, instantly noticed Gary when he walked in the room. He definitely "stood" out to her. Gary was similarly transfixed by Alexa's blue eyes and gravitated toward her warm personality. A few weeks into the semester, Gary texted Alexa to see if she wanted to work on an assignment together for their legal writing class. She was convinced that he just wanted to copy off of her work but was flattered nonetheless. They met at Flightpath Coffee shop on September 12, 2015, and Gary teased her for taking half an hour to eat a slice of pizza. Despite Gary’s serious flirting, he still wasn’t sure how she felt. But when he went to order some coffee, he caught her looking his way. She agreed to give him a ride home, and before they could leave he mustered up the courage to ask her out. It took a bit of convincing, but she finally said yes. Since then, Alexa has made Gary love cats, taught him how to cook with Cuban spices, and helped him look on the bright side. Gary has made Alexa love pho, taught her exactly eight Russian words, and helped her realize that she doesn’t have to calendar everything. Four years later, they are still spending a lot of time at coffee shops together.
Alexa's first love was Elvis Presley. Growing up, she ignored all the boy bands and spent her days listening to the King. Ten years later, she met another charming fella with piercing blue eyes. When it came time to pop the question, Gary knew he had to involve Elvis somehow. He would require some deception, and he enlisted their friends Jen and Sam into his plan. Jen texted Alexa and told her that “one of her co-workers” had “given her four tickets” to see an Elvis impersonator. How could she resist? On July 12, 2019, Alexa met them downtown at a lounge beneath the Revention Center. With their “VIP tickets,” they beat the line to get inside and scored front-row seats. When Elvis hit the stage, Alexa was having such a blast that she didn’t notice Gary leaving to use the restroom. A few minutes later, Elvis introduced a special guest to sing a couple numbers from his 1968 comeback special (Alexa's favorite). Then Gary came out wearing lots of leather and some over-the-top black sideburns! As he finished singing "All Shook Up," Gary invited Alexa on stage and asked the big question. Of course she said yes! Before she knew it, Gary and Alexa's friends and family (including the Yevelevs, who had flown in from California) appeared from behind the curtain and rushed the stage! Gary pulled off the most epic engagement, and Gary and Alexa got to celebrate with the people they loved most, including the King.
