Amanda and Garrett met in 2016 (thanks to Bumble) at the end of both of their graduate studies. Garrett had recently graduated with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy and Amanda was finishing her Masters in Occupational Therapy. Garrett was in the middle of studying for his board exam when they went on their first date on June 23, 2016.

Garrett and Amanda traveled to Oahu to join his parents on a vacation in February 2018. After a late breakfast at Aulani, Garrett had to convince Amanda to go on a short walk around the resorts and beach instead of taking a nap. After getting her to Secret Beach in Kapolei, Garrett and Amanda spent a short time on the beach before he got on one knee to ask Amanda to spend the rest of her life with him. After many tears (and drinks), Garrett and Amanda went back to Aulani to take photos, and to surprise Amanda with her parents joining them in Hawaii to celebrate.
