It was January 1, 2017. After celebrating the start to a new year, and with no one to kiss at midnight, both Michael and Holly did what most single folks do at a time like this...open their trusty dating apps to scout the local talent! Digital cupid (OKCupid), was about to work some magic! Michael saw Holly's profile and was intrigued by this redheaded dork with curves for days. Holly saw Michael's profile and thought, "That goofy teacher has amazing curly hair and gorgeous blue eyes!". Michael sent Holly a message and they were off to the races! Soon (as in that very same day!), they had exchanged numbers and were texting up a storm. Michael was on winter break and asked for a date. Holly said yes! Holly worked for a professional theatre company and didn't have a life so the only day she could meet was Wednesday, January 4th. The date was set. Michael, being a Phi Delt and the life of many NAU parties (Mikeeey!), knew all the best places to grab some grub. As a culinary connoisseur, Michael wanted to take Holly to a great local spot. After much hem and haw (true foreshadowing into this relationship; "Where should we go to eat?"), they settled on a local Italian place. That evening, the two met at Adela's Italian Bistro for a first date. Neither can recall what was said that night but both remember feeling extremely comfortable with the other and at ease. After some delicious pasta, the two headed towards their cars. Michael pulled Holly close and kissed her for the first time. She melted. They made plans for a second date and the rest is history.
Holly loves her birthday. A lot. She calls it "Hollydays" because it's the holiday of Holly. Many find this a bit silly and ridiculous...including Michael. He decided that instead of proposing as soon as he had the ring, he was going to make Holly wait for her ridiculously silly birthday (despite the MANY hints she was constantly dropping). Michael had purchased their first home together in September; the Dailey House for their daily lives. Holly had finally gotten their backyard pool up and running. She was determined to have a relaxing 31st birthday. On October 5th, after a day of snacks, movies, naps and hanging out, Michael took Holly out to eat for her birthday. Sushi, of course! Once the two of them arrived back home, Michael suggested they go outside to the backyard. While sitting under the gazebo, enjoying the fruits of her labor, Holly admired the pool and cooler weather. Michael asked Holly if she enjoyed her birthday. She said, yes. Michael asked if she wanted her gift and Holly replied, "of course!". Thinking he was going to head inside, Holly sprawled out on the outdoor couch and turned towards the pool. Michael grabbed the ring box from his pocket, got down on one knee and proposed. Holly was in utter shock. She did not see this coming at all. She was in such shock that it took her awhile to answer his big question. Finally, she responded with, "of course, I will marry you!" #thatswhatshesaid
