The "Wake Up". The Jaggo is the party before the wedding. It was used traditionally to let everyone in the village know that someone in that house was getting married. The ceremony is loud, full of dancing, drinks & food and will go late into the night. Expected Attire: Men: kurta pajama or a traditional suit Women: bright colored lengha/patiala suit or formal attire Example photos & video can be found under the Gallery tab.

Question

What is Anand Karaj?

Answer

It's our wedding day! Everybody must be at the gurdwara (temple) by 9 AM. From there there will be a brief meeting/exchange of the families before everybody will file into the building for the ceremony. *All heads MUST be covered and shoes MUST come off prior to entering.* Men who do not bring their own head covering will be given a patka (bandana) to wear before entering. Women should bring a headscarf to wear throughout the duration. Upon entering the gurdwara everybody will wash their hands and then be served breakfast pre-ceremony, so come hungry! You will also receive lunch post-ceremony, so really - please come hungry. Guests will enter the room in which we will be married by walking down the aisle and bowing. Women will sit on the left side of the room while men will sit on the right side. There will be chairs placed alongside the outside wall for the elderly guests, but everybody else will be expected to sit cross legged on the floor for the duration of the ceremony. Start preparing your knees now! The ceremony in total will last ~2-3 hours. As mentioned previously, lunch will be served post-ceremony. Expected Attire: Men: kurta pajama or formal suit (head covered) Women: Punjabi suit or conservative dress with shoulders covered. If wearing a conservative dress you MUST wear leggings underneath the dress. A headscarf is required. Example photos & video can be found under the Gallery tab.

Question

What to expect for the Reception?

Answer

Your traditional reception! We will be mixing the cultures throughout the night for everything from the food & music to the traditions of both cultures. Cocktail hour will kick off at 5 PM with doors opening to the ballroom an hour later. We expect to be partying until 2 AM, so plan accordingly. Expected Attire: Formal Wear - leggings are not required underneath women's dresses for this event - no head coverings are required for this event

Question

I want Punjabi clothing, where should I go?

Answer

Please know that you do NOT have to wear the Punjabi clothing! None of this is mandatory. However, we want to make sure that you know you have the option if you choose to do so. There are several options for different Punjabi suits, lehengas and kurta pajamas on Amazon. We do not guarantee that these will fit properly or be the best material, but it is an option for those who wish to partake in the culture affordably without having to travel to purchase. If you wish for better material and don't mind a pricier option, there are multiple locations in Northern New Jersey that you can go to to look at and purchase. Please keep in mind that these clothes may need to be tailored to fit after purchase. Here is a google link to a few stores in the surrounding area: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MTuJYuMcfu8Big1CA
