Zach and I were both in the Honors College at UCA, and he sat behind me at the talent show at the end of the freshman orientation retreat. I turned around and asked him what his talent was, and he said he was doing a magic trick! For my talent, I read a short story. After that, we became fast friends and eventually started Talking. We started watching Parks & Rec together, and I introduced him to The Princess Bride. We bonded over our mutual dislike of the first season of Game of Thrones. We went on our first date in October. We went to IHOP for breakfast. That night I was doing a poetry reading, and he came to support me, then we went and watched It 2. We started going steady in November.
We were at the Honors 4H retreat. While I was ready to do my card trick, Gabby was waiting to read her story, and I can't remember what she said to me in all honesty. Then, the next time we met she came to my friend's table at lunch. (I thought she was super cute, but I kept quiet.)
I’d been studying abroad in Italy for a month. Zach picked me up from the airport at midnight with McChickens. He asked me to load my suitcase, and when I turned around he was down on one knee. He was shaking when he asked if I would marry him. I tackled him in the parking lot, knocking over my Sprite, and said yes!
Gabby studied abroad for the summer, so I spent July on my own at my sister's place. I had known for a while that I wanted to propose, but I never had a concrete plan. I spent too much of the month just missing her; I couldn't even think of a romantic thing to do for the proposal. The night she was supposed to get back, I went to her family's house and asked for their blessing. They agreed, and I immediately headed for the airport and waited for her. While I was waiting, I was thinking of how to propose. I wasn't even sure if I wanted to propose that night yet. I wanted to make sure it was something romantic, but in the end, I just asked her as soon as I was alone with her. She said yes :)
