HOW WE MET 8.18.18 Gabrielle and Justin met during graduate student orientation at the beginning of their graduate careers at Iowa State University. Justin had just moved to Iowa and was not familiar with the area. He asked Gabrielle to share with him some cool local spots to go explore. She wrote down some places and the following Monday, Justin told Gabrielle that he had visited them all. Gabrielle remarked, “You went to all those places this weekend? That is all that we have around here!” It turns out there was still more to explore and within the next few weeks Gabrielle and Justin went kayaking together at Ada Hayden Park, competed in a mud volleyball tournament, went hiking at Ledges State Park, and (depending who you ask) went on their first date, a dinner boat river cruise on the Mississippi River. THE PROPOSAL 9.14.19 Justin proposed to Gabrielle on September 14, 2019. Gabrielle and Justin had put together a video of Justin’s hiking adventures from his journey on the Pacific Crest Trail. On the evening of September 14th, in front of family and friends, they hosted an outdoor presentation of the “Night with Rattlesnake” video at the Ada Hayden Park on the outskirts of Ames, Iowa. Gabrielle knew about the video but she did not know about the follow-up video. On his hike, Justin carried with him a little stuffed monkey. Every day he took a picture of the monkey along with the highlight of each day. The follow-up video documented his journey as told from the perspective of the monkey. After the video Justin presented the monkey to Gabrielle, but not before cutting open the back of the monkey to reveal a ring that it had been carrying with it over 2,000 miles. Justin got down on one knee and said, “Gabrielle, I want you to be more than just a part of my adventure this summer. I want you to be my companion for life. Forsaken all others, will you marry me?” And she said... YES!
