They met during Winter of Track and Field. John was a freshman and Gabby was a sophomore. Gabby asked John a question at practice, and John responded rudely. Gabby stayed away from John for two more years (lol). John and Gabby became friends during her senior year. John took Gabby to his junior ball. A few months later, John asked Gabby to be his girlfriend and to prom at the same time.

John booked a weekend away at a cabin in upstate New York. Gabby thought it was indeed just another fun outing and that John would in fact not be proposing to her. (She thought it was for sure happening at graduation and maybe a few other times too). Since the cabin overlooked the Catskill mountains, Gabby wanted to take pictures together. While Gabby was getting ready, John was setting up to propose to Gabby. John set up his phone to record a video, but Gabby thought the phone was on a timer to take pictures. They posed together and after a few seconds, Gabby walked away to grab the phone. John told her to come back and when she turned around, John was on one knee and asked Gabby to marry him :)
