It was love at first "Bonjour". Not at all, actually. We met at l'Alliance Française in 2017, and it took Gavin months to send me an email invitation to hang out after class. He framed it as a "group hang out" with our other classmates, but turns out he didn't actually invite anyone else. Suspect! The first time we spoke (in French) was my first day of French class. I was sitting silently by myself when Gavin came strolling in and immediately started chatting up our professor. I must say, I was impressed at how confident he was with the language and assumed he was the professor's assistant. Not knowing anything about Gavin and wanting to make some contribution to his and the prof's conversation, I asked him if he was French. An innocent question, simply polite small talk that he took way too closely to heart! Apparently, he shared my comment with his family and couldn't get over that someone thought he was French. He admitted to me later that he thought my question was silly because, why would he be a Frenchman taking French classes?! But how was I supposed to know, being a newbie to the class! Fast forward a couple months to when we first started dating. I had no idea what Gavin's English-speaking voice sounded like because we had only spoken French with each other. When we finally resorted to our mother-tongue, I was pleasantly surprised by his darling California accent. I still, to this day, fail to understand myself what that actually means...but he definitely has one :) That's how our little love story began, and I cannot imagine life without this man of mine!
