La Rencontre

For many years I have felt the need to serve overseas. After an year in college volunteering in Africa I knew God wanted me to use my medical carier to help the destitute. After finishing my medical training I struggled with whether or not to go to the mission field alone. But when I thought of staying in the States I had no peace. A hospital deep in the bush of Chad in central Africa needed a doctor, so I followed the voice of God and left. As Chad is a former French colony I needed to learn the basics of French and therefore spent three months in a school near Geneva. During my meals in the cafeteria I began to make the acquaintance of a handsome Brazilian gentleman studying theology there. We shared many deep discussions, and as I have a hunger for adventure, we started climbing mountains and exploring Europe. When we talked about our purpose in life we found that our goal was the same: service. We found that in each other's presence we were uplifted closer to God. Our time together was quickly running out. I invited him to experience the mission in Chad and to my surprise he was enthusiastic to accompany me for my first month, January 2018. While there he not only survived the challenging conditions in Chad (our Hospital is truly at the ends of the earth) but he thrived. We made plans to see each other again when I would attend a course in Europe in April. Dating a doctor deep in the bush with limited communication was a challenge he was wiling to accept. We reunited in Paris this April, where his father serves as a pastor. After church, teaching a health seminar and walking in a park we shared a high class vegan meal. Then he took me to a place in stark contrast to Chad: le Trocadéro devant la Tour Eiffel! With the glowing lights of this iconic structure in the background, he bent down on one knee, took my hand, and declared, "I would like to know if you would like to marry me." Oui!!! We are both excited to see Gods plans continue to unfold in our lives.
