Question

Planning a wedding can feel one frivolous cost after another, so it is important to us to use this opportunity to reflect and give back to our communities. In celebration of our wedding, we are giving tzedaka to three important causes that have helped shape our relationship:

Answer

As we grew closer throughout the height of the pandemic, Elizabeth Street Garden provided a respite of green space in our densely packed neighborhood. When Evan was living on Elizabeth Street and Syd was on Mulberry, the garden acted as our shared backyard, where we would read, eat, and just sit with each other for hours on end. Our Ketubah (designed by Rachel Machowsky) will capture the green splendor of this special space, which is now at risk of destruction. To thank the ESG team for what they provided us, we will be donating to the garden's legal defense fund to help protect this hidden gem. Learn more: elizabethstreetgarden.com In honor of Rabbi Barbara Wortman, we are making a donation to the Baco/Che-Na-Wah Bazaar Foundation. Each year at Camps Baco and Che-Na-Wah, the annual Bazaar raised tens of thousands of dollars while campers ran around in matching tee shirts, shaved balloons, and ate endless banana bread. This organized day of FUNdraising was crucial in teaching Sydney about the importance of looking outside of yourself and helping as often as you can. The Bazaar Foundation distributes donations to many organizations so that children in need can experience the magic that summer camp can offer. Learn more: bcbazaarfoundation.org Physicians for Human Rights is the third non-profit we will be supporting in honor of our wedding. As the Digital Communications Manager for the organization, Evan spends his days contributing to the mission of PHR, which works at the intersection of medicine, science, and law to secure human rights and justice for all. We know it is imperative to support this initiative as we build our future and family together. Learn more: phr.org
