Our third(?) date was at an exhibit here and frankly this is one of our favorite spots in the city to explore. The sculpture garden and main exhibits are free to explore. They have a rotating exhibit that you can purchase tickets for if you choose.
A great place to go for a long walk. You can walk around the island or cross the Potterfield pedestrian bridge to access a rock wall (if you're into that thing), more hiking trails, and great views of the canal and river. This is pretty casual terrain so only comfy shoes necessary and maybe a light coat or sweatshirt if it's windy on the bridge.
If you want to take a long hike by the river, this is a great place to do it. Park at the Texas Beach/North Bank Trail parking lot and follow the trail where you'll eventually cross a concrete bridge. Take the stairs and follow the path and eventually you'll be walking parallel to the river. There are a ton of spots to stop and sit by the river and relax. You'll know when you've hit Texas Beach when you come to an area with a bunch of wooden bridges to cross rocky areas. If you keep going a bit further you'll be able to explore an old grain mill that was powered by the James. The dirt trails are maintained and not overly strenuous.
Our favorite brewery in Richmond. That said, they are IPA heavy so if you aren't into that then your options may be somewhat limited. A new location opened up in Forest Hill recently and has a much bigger indoor space and a taco restaurant attached.
