Sara and I met during our freshman year of college. We knew each other through common friends and we were only acquaintances for a while. I started thinking of her as a friend on a snowy day. She was wearing a pink and grey scarf from Oxford, England that she thought was funny to wear in Oxford, Mississippi. I was sliding down a snowy hill using a mattress from the dorms, and I let her borrow it after me. I liked how she smiled with her eyes. Later on, we went on a Spring Break trip to Orange Beach, Alabama, and we started dating soon after. Since then we’ve shared very awesome moments, and we have become best friends. We love traveling together and all the adventure that comes with visiting new places while on a college student budget. We also enjoy cooking together and competing to see who of us can eat spicier food (she usually beats me.)
The proposal moment happened in Memphis by the Mississippi river. We went on a walk by the riverside and then we sat at a bench overlooking the water. It was around sunset when I held her hand and got on one knee. In the background, I played a song that I had recorded for this moment. I had composed it and played it on my guitar a few days before, and the title was “Marry me” (original, I know). We had already talked about marriage before, and we both agreed it was the right time (…and Sara was making some pretty obvious hints). So it wasn’t that big of a surprise, but I was still very nervous. Oh, and she said yes!
