The Pisgah National Forest is a land of mile-high peaks, cascading waterfalls, and heavily forested slopes. Comprised of over 500,000 acres, the Pisgah is primarily a hardwood forest with whitewater rivers, waterfalls and hundreds of miles of trails. This national forest is home of the first tract of land purchased under the Weeks Act of 1911 which led to the creation of the national forests in the eastern United States.

NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center) in the Nantahala Gorge is a 500-acre playground for outdoor lovers. In addition to rafting and kayaking on the Nantahala River, you can fly on ziplines, play in the treetops, bike, and hike. At the NOC you will find the trail head for the Appalachian trail, two riverside restaurants, and plenty of outdoor stores.

Wayah Bald has a vantage point of 5,342 ft. in elevation in the Nantahala National Forest, near Franklin, North Carolina. On a clear day, you can see north to the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and south into the rolling hills of Georgia. Take a short hike from the summit parking area to climb an old stone fire tower, built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, to witness panoramic views of the southern Appalachian mountain chain.

Looking Glass Falls is one of North Carolina’s most popular waterfalls, given its easy, roadside access and classic waterfall beauty. US 276 is a gorgeous drive, well-loved for its winding meanders through the Pisgah National Forest and access to the area’s most popular attractions, including Sliding Rock, Moore Cove Falls, and Pink Beds at the Cradle of Forestry.

Sliding Rock is located in Pisgah National Forest just north of Brevard, 7.6 miles from the junction of US Highways 64 and 276. Take the plunge down a 60-foot slippery cascade into the 50-60 degree, 8-foot deep pool.

Explore the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. You can drive nearly all the way to the summit. From the parking area it is just a half-mile hike to reach the observation deck and enjoy the long-range mountain views. Mount Mitchell also has a museum, gift shop, restaurant (open during spring to fall) and restrooms
