How We Met

08.26.2008

We met in Mrs. Lancia's eighth grade English class at Reedy Creek Middle School. Ashton had just moved to Cary from Charlotte and by some stroke of luck, we ended up in the same English and Math class. Fun fact: Ashton used to turn red anytime anyone called on him. His face, neck, and arms would turn bright red. This is how I first noticed Ashton. Throughout the years, our friendship became more and our love of puns, corny jokes, and hockey drew us closer to each other. Our first date was at the Ice House in Cary, junior year of high school and after that night it was never quite the same.

The Proposal

09.22.2017

On our five year anniversary, we made our way to our favorite spot in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Devil's Courthouse. This also happens to be the very first hike that we took on our first trip to the mountains. Ashton had originally planned to make this the last stop of the day to watch the sunset at the overlook. However, if you know Ashton, you know that patience isn't always his strongest trait when he is excited about something. On the way up to the mountains, he stressed how important it was to go there first. He wasn't willing to budge, so that morning we hiked Devil's Courthouse with our dog Beau. When we arrived, thirty or so bikers drove up and parked. This normally quiet spot was not so quiet that morning. On any other day Ashton would stop to admire the bikes but this morning his face turned bright red and he just kept saying he couldn't believe all of these people were coming to hike. I know he didn't think it was comical then but looking back on the moment this is one we laugh about. We waited a few minutes and started our hike. Once we were at the top, the silence was deafening and the beauty, indescribable. If you haven't been, you can see the mountains of four states simultaneously. Surprisingly after all of the visitors that came to the parking lot there was only one couple at the top of the lookout aside from the two of us. Ashton had always said that when he proposed he would have a grande monologue prior to getting down on one knee however, Ashton was at a loss for words. As I sat on the edge of the overlook with Beau at my side I heard Ashton say my full name, which rarely happens, and that is when he reached into his pocket, pulled out the ring and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him in our very favorite place. We were engaged! We are incredibly excited to share this next step in our lives with all of you. We will see you in Pinehurst!
