Black Tie
We will be having a traditional Scottish ceremony and invite men to wear kilts if they so choose. The groom and groomsmen will be wearing kilts. The kilt is the traditional formal dress of the Scottish people but you do not have to be Scottish in order to partake in this tradition of Highland Dress. Here are a few rules you should follow if you are planning on wearing a kilt for the wedding: 1. THE JACKET: As our wedding is a BLACK-TIE affair, you should wear the Prince Charlie jacket. The Prince Charlie Jacket is short in the front and long in the back (example shown above). You may wear this jacket with either a 3-button or 5-button vest underneath, a black bowtie and a white shirt. Some kilt rental sites will offer a Gille shirt. DO NOT RENT. This is a very informal shirt (think Outlander). 2. THE TARTAN: Through these different sites, you will have a variety of tartans to choose from. If your family has a specific one that is not available to rent, many sites will have a custom kilt hire tab. 3. THE FLY PLAID: Only the groom wears a fly plaid in a Scottish wedding so this is not needed 4. THE KILT: A kilt will weigh between 5-8lbs. They are heavy, which makes packing them a pain so we recommend bringing the entire outfit in a suit bag. The proper way to wear a kilt is without underwear. But remember, the kilt is also made of wool, so yes, it is itchy, and yes, it is quite warm. Plan accordingly. 5. THE SGIAN-DUBH (Ceremonial Dagger): The dagger goes in your sock. Make sure that if you are bringing it by plane, you put it in your checked luggage. 6. KILT BELT: You can choose whether or not to wear the kilt belt. It is completely optional.
