Dusk was approaching as five American tourists wandered down cobblestone streets into the Florence city center. The lights and sounds coming from the crowds surrounding the Duomo drew them to the marble steps of the magnificent cathedral. They found a quiet corner to sit and drink and talk. Over their conversations of food and wine, history, and the beauty of Italy, a familiar sound…a group of English-speaking college students was making their way towards them through the crowd. One of the students, a radiantly cheerful woman, caught the eye of one of the young men sitting on the marble steps. He rose to introduce himself. They spoke of home, their favorite experiences in Italy thus far, and where their travels would take them. Their conversation was brief, but they both knew it was special. The young man sat back on his step watching her fade into the crowd, still struck by her smile, romanticizing their chance encounter. His daydream was broken by a gentle tap on his shoulder. She had come back to deliver a note and a message. It was a piece of her map, upon which she had written her name, that she handed to him and softly said, ”Find me on Facebook”. And so, he did. For four years following that fateful night, she remained in the back of his mind and he in hers. They stayed connected through the occasional "like" on instagram, text message, and even attempts to meet up while both in Florida. Through his persistence, they were finally able to meet for a second time in December of 2017. It was pure magic. Every 2-3 weeks for the next year and a half, they were on a plane to visit one another in Vermont or Florida. In June of 2019, he surprised her with a trip back to the place that had changed their lives, to the very steps where they had first met. He handed her a note, the same piece of map that she had given him 4 years prior, upon which he had added his last name with a question mark. He got down on one knee and softly said, “Will you marry me?”
