In 2015, both Darlene and Sam were newly single. Not even looking either. A year prior, Darlene befriended an amazing human being by the name of Lenecia or "Neci" and unbeknownst to Darlene, Neci was a close sk8 friend of Sam's. October of that year both the ladies decided to go skating. Darlene loves to support breast cancer awareness and that night happened to be themed for the cause. She never went skating as a young girl so this was a new environment, filled with very unique people to meet. Sam has been well-known in the skate community for his talent, humility and love for the art. He considers himself an introvert so who knows if he and Darlene would have ever engaged without Neci's connecting force. That night, Darlene saw Neci and Sam talking in the center of the rink and boldly made her way over to introduce herself. "A friend of Neci's is a friend of mine" she has often said. Ironically, the two never exchanged numbers that night. It was the following night at Neci's frequent gatherings called "Hotel California" that Sam and Darlene happened to link up again. One song led to another and as the night persisted the two talked and danced the night away. They started off as friends and gave each other what was needed most, genuine care and a listening ear. Darlene is the youngest of four and daughter to Dottie and the late Steven Sanford. All her life she was ambitious, friendly and spontaneous. She loves her family and friends and strives to support their goals as they do the same for her. Sam is the youngest also and son to Millie and the late Sam Fonville. He is a patient and technical soul that values God and collaboration. In 2017, the couple posed for their second anniversary photo shoot in Newport News City Park. When they transitioned to the Friendship Bridge, Sam met her with both their mothers. With beautiful words from the heart, Sam humbly knelt and asked her hand in marriage, she said YES! With God as the center they look forward to FOREVER!
