Don’t miss The Grand Old Lady, Miri’s first drilled oil well, established in 1910 by Shell. This historic monument next to Canada Hill serves as a reminder of the city’s beginnings in the oil industry. You may watch Miri most iconic sunset here as well.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gunung Mulu National Park is among the top things to do in Miri and definitely a must-visit for any traveler. Renowned for stunning limestone karst formations, caves, and diverse ecosystems, Mulu Park is home to the world's largest cave chamber, the Sarawak Chamber, and the impressive Deer Cave, which houses millions of bats. Visitors can tour the complex cave system, hike the strenuous Pinnacles Trail for views at a landscape scale, or explore this natural wonder on a ranger-led night walk to see dynamic biodiversity in action.
Niah National Park is the other major natural attraction around the city of Miri and home to the famous Niah Caves. It is a protection area housing the remains of one of the oldest human remains in Southeast Asia, dated over 40,000 years old. The main cave, Niah Great Cave, is probably the most visited place of all time by both archaeologists and normal tourists. The visitors can hike in the rainforest, tour the large chambers of caves, and find ancient wall paintings and artifacts. The Painted Cave, a small cave in the park, provides evidence of rock paintings depicting the burial rites of the early inhabitants.
Canada Hill is one of the famous spots in Miri that offers panoramic views of the city and the South China Sea. The hill also provides a worthy site from which to view an excellent sunset, one of the reasons it is liked both by locals and tourists. Escape the city to catch a stunning bird’s eye view of the skyline and the ocean beyond. While you can take a car ride up to the lookout spot, this hill is a common hiking trail (takes about ~30min) among locals too. The sun sets at 6.30pm. You can also a grab a nice, cold coconut drink at Stall No 2 too!
If you have more time in Miri, its worthwhile to pay a visit to Tusan Beach for Cliff seeing. Tusan Beach was once famous for its Drinking Horse Cliff, but since its collapse, there have been fewer visitors. It’s still worth a visit though because it’s a beautiful spot to catch a mesmerizing sunset! Getting down to the beach shore can be challenging since there aren’t any clear paths. So ask the locals for guidance or just enjoy the stunning ocean views from the top. Unfortunately, there’s nothing much to do here other than Cliff seeing.
Alcohol Lovers TAVN in Miri is truly a gem! The vibes were amazing, and the atmosphere was so inviting—perfect for a chill hangout. I had an amazing time with my friends, and it’s definitely a spot I’d love to revisit, whether for another gathering with friends or a cozy date night. Everything was great, and the food was absolutely delicious! I loved the environment—it’s very aesthetic and minimalist. The only downside was that the music was a bit too loud.
Coffee Lovers Definitely a go to place when you visit Miri. They serve one of the best cakes made locally, rum raisin cheesecake and other cakes. The cheesecakes are very rich and delicious. We ordered their hot food, biryani rice with lamb. It was so yummy and delicious. They have good tasting lattes. Very beautiful and relaxing cafe.
