Please note that a valid passport is required for travel to Italy. Your US passport must be valid for at least six months after your planned return date. We recommend checking your passport expiration date now to ensure it meets these requirements, and allows you ample time for renewal if needed. If you need to renew your passport, you can follow the link below for instructions on how to do so. If you do not have a passport and want to attend, you'll want to apply for one as soon as possible. Turnaround times on passports can be months during busy seasons.
Flight
The most non-stop flights out of Boston will be into Rome Fiumicino Airport. Most flights will take off from Boston in the evening, landing you in Rome the next morning. You can take a train from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Sorrento via Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale. Please continue reading for all the additional ways to get to Sorrento from either Rome or Naples.
Flight
NAP is the closest international airport to the Amalfi Coast, located about 37 miles north of the coast. Although the closest airport to Sorrento, there are very few direct flights from the US to NAP. Please continue reading for how to get to Sorrento from NAP.
Train
If you choose to fly into FCO airport, high-speed trains are the fastest way to get from Rome to Naples in a speedy 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fiumicino does have its own train station, however, you will need to transfer at Rome's Termini Station towards Napoli Centrale Station.
Travel Note
Train - From NAP airport, you will need to either take a taxi, or the Alibus shuttle bus to Napoli Centrale Station. Napoli Centrale Station is approximately a 10-15 min drive from NAP. The train from Napoli Centrale to Sorrento runs frequently, and takes about an hour. This is generally the fastest and cheapest way to get to Sorrento from Naples. In Napoli Centrale, the Circumvesuviana train station is downstairs. This public transport line runs from Naples to Sorrento, and tickets cost less than €4. You can purchase tickets at the ticket office at the entrance to the platform. Ferry - The most scenic way! The Naples to Sorrento ferry line is active all year long, and the routes depart from the Molo Beverello pier. You can reach the Naples Port via the Alibus shuttle route which leaves from the NAP airport and is approximately a 15 min drive. The high speed ferry takes about 40 minutes from Naples to Sorrento. Bus - The Curreri Viaggi bus departs from the Naples Capodichino airport terminal and arrives in Sorrento in a little over an hour. You can purchase your ticket on board for €10. The bus stop is opposite the airport arrivals gate; buses arrive about ten minutes before every scheduled departure and there is ample space for luggage on board. Private transfer - A private transfer takes about 80 mins and starts at around €67.90. A local driver can help with luggage and provide a well-organized arrival. Please note, your hotel may be able to arrange this for you. Taxi - A taxi from the airport to Sorrento can cost around €85 and take about 80 minutes. Drive (rental car) - The drive from the airport to Sorrento takes a little over an hour. If you have never driven in Italy before, I do not recommend this option... trust me! :). If you decide to do this, you should obtain an international drivers license before leaving the US.
