John was returning to Wednesdays volleyball at the Worthington Rec Center after a few years break. Fernanda had been playing since she moved to the country, thanks to Neil, her co-worker and neighbor. In the beginning they didn't interact much, but after a few gatherings with friends, they started chatting a little, realizing they had things in common. Through a group text, he started texting her separately during her business trip overseas, suggesting sites for her to check out in her free time. At first, she wasn't sure who it was, but she was happy when he said it was John. They found out that they both had a taste for geography and politics, loved their grown-up kids and parents. When she returned from her trip, he surprised her at Kroger's checkout asking her to help him pick vegetables for a barbecue. After a few weeks, he said he needed new shoes and she offered to join him on a trip to DSW, since she needed new sneakers too. One night after volleyball, he was trying to get some friends to go out together. Everybody was "iffy", and she felt weird when realizing after the fact that nobody else besides her was joining. However, food was ordered and getting cold, he couldn't stop talking and it was hard to resist his deep eyes. That was when she made a bold move and kissed him. To her despair, he acted surprised. Two months after that, came the best proof that they could easily spend endless hours together without killing each other: a last-minute road trip to the Grand Canyon in her jeep during the week of Thanksgiving. That was just the first of many adventures together.
