They had peripherally known each other for 15 years, as Nina is close friends with Joe's sister Tifa. But it wasn't until the fall of 2022 that a friendship started to blossom over their shared interest in both movies and gardening. They chatted infrequently until March '23, when they both realized not only how much they have in common, but how much they enjoyed the conversations. She asked him if he was interested in taking their respective dogs for an impromptu walk at Black Hill Regional Park on 4.10.23, and ended up walking and talking for 8+ miles! They began dating within a week, and the rest is history!

Joe had decided that the next time they went back to Black Hill Park is when he would propose. One day, Nina suggested another walk with the dogs at Black Hill, and so he came prepared with the ring! Nina owed him some planking time, and so partway through the walk, Joe told her he would do pushups while she planked, and he took out his phone to record the process. After they finished, he stayed down on one knee and proposed in Japanese, which he has been diligently learning on Duolingo for the last 4 months! She responded "Hai" (yes) in Japanese! Nina and Joe are beyond excited to share this joyous day with you!
