How We Met

You probably came to this section thinking you were going to read one of those sappy “love at first sight” moments, or maybe even a lovely storybook beginning. Well… It was none of that. Heather and Jamie originally met in 2012. Having recently graduated from Keuka College, Heather had moved to Palmyra NY. Best friend of Jamie and fellow Keuka graduate, Scott Welch, introduced the two while Jamie was home on leave. It was not long before Jamie dropped his first pick up line to Heather, “OH, my ex-wife used to live in those apartments”. This tragic line missed the mark worse than Scott Norwood in Super Bowl XXV. The two shared a brief connection while attending the races at Watkins Glen days later, but Heather ultimately rejected Jamie, who was already in pain from the Bush Light – Heather was feeling the pain as well. To this day, Jamie considers it the single greatest blow to his ego ever. Heather attributes the rejection to poor timing and not being in the right place in life. Fast forward a few months – The connection resumed. Jamie was home for the holidays and Heather reached out. They began to talk regularly, even though Jamie had deployed to Afghanistan immediately following his leave. Unfortunately, some crazy lady from Arkansas scared Heather away by posting sappy country lyrics all over Jamie’s Facebook wall as if they were dating. To be clear, they were NOT dating, but nobody could blame Heather for thinking otherwise. Once again, nothing would become of the two.

Relationship #1

Fast forward a year and a half – Jamie comes home from the service. Jamie had been home for a few months when Heather contacted him (this is twice now that she reached out!). She could not believe that he had not told her he was home, and he was stunned by her interest after crazy Arkansas lady debacle. During their very first discussion in months, Jamie explained he was going to the Tim McGraw concert the following day with friends. Heather explained she too had friends going, but that she had not bought tickets. The next day, she sent him a text message asking where he was, in which he explained, “At the Tim McGraw concert”. She followed with, “I am too, where at the concert are you”? At this point, Jamie was slightly concerned that he had a crazy woman following him, but it wasn’t long before he threw caution to the wind! As Heather’s bridesmaid Hannah (and husband Chris) can attest to, the two began what you would call, sloppy drunk concert romancing. A year of dating – and…. Well folks, this is where storytelling becomes difficult. Nobody wants to give out bad news, but this love story isn’t perfect! Jamie broke Heather’s heart. We can spare the details since this is the low point of our story, but Jamie broke it off with Heather out of nowhere. To this day, she reminds him of what a dummy he was. And in turn, he kindly reminds her that she shouldn’t have impulsively “bought that damn SUV a week later”.

Relationship #2

They spent a year apart before finally reconnecting - for the last time! Heather and Jamie had occasionally communicated during their yearlong breakup. Heather attempted on several occasions to re-engage a relationship, but never found any success, until one day when Jamie got a little jealous! In that moment of jealousy, Jamie realized that he was looking for something that he had once given up on. And so, the two discussed a potential second go at love. Ultimatums were issued, lines were drawn in the sand. They had their plan and they executed it. Jamie would tell you “resumed their relationship”; Heather would say they “started a new relationship”. It is often a point of contention as they argue how long they have been together, five years vs. three years. However, they both often heard referring to past events as “relationship one” or “relationship two”. Not long after they rekindled their relationship, Jamie visited Heather in NYC where they attended a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. One might think this is a meaningless detail because NOBODY cares about the Knicks, but it just so happens this is one of the most important nights of this already too long novel. This is because Carmelo Anthony hit a magical buzzer beater to beat the Philadelphia 76’ers. It is widely believed to be this Carmelo magic, that led to the most magical part of Heather and Jamie’s life – a sweet little girl whom you might know as Hazel Anne Consler.

The Proposal

Around two years of dating, and parenting – the moment is here. Heather and Jamie chose not to go the old-fashioned route of getting married because of baby Hazel, instead, they opted to let their love blossom naturally. And so it did… After almost two years, and lots of pressure from Heather and future in-laws, he bought a ring! He wanted it to be a surprise just as much as he wanted it to be a special moment. He knew if he took her to Watkins Glen State Park, her favorite place on earth, she would know what was going on because he would never agree to go hiking. Instead he opted for her second favorite place, NYC. He solicited some help from Heather’s friend Melissa, and set it all up perfectly! Heather even thought the trip to NYC was her idea! Jamie, with the help of Hazel of course, proposed on the rocky beach of the Hudson River in DUMBO park!

Our Storybook

We began this story by noting the lack of “love at first sight” moments or storybook beginnings. Everyone has their own journey on the way to happiness. Although our journey had twists, turns, and even a screeching halt along the way, we do find ourselves at the end of our beginning. We are blessed to have so many people who love and support us, and we cant wait for you to join us on July 18th, when we say “I do” and begin our storybook ending! With Love, Heather & Jamie
