We're Getting Married!

As two scarlet threads meet and intertwine in a tapestry guided by an artist’s hand, so it is with Fiona and Kyle. Fiona and Kyle had both grown up in the student ministries at Valley Community Church, yet their paths remained mostly separate, their threads distant. As providence would have it, they would both remain rooted in their hometown of Pleasanton, going to college locally. God was there that they would be called into ministry in the student ministries they grew up in: Fiona in high school ministry, Kyle in middle school. Their shared devotion for Jesus and love for students gave way to many sweet conversations. Furthermore, their desks sat six feet apart from each other, which is a recipe for a relationship. On August 5, 2023, Fiona and Kyle walked down the aisle together as a bridesmaid and groomsman in the wedding of Brett and Kylia Johnson. Brett and Kyle had long since been friends, as had Kylia and Fiona. After a night of dancing and celebrating a new marriage, Kyle went home and wrote the following in his journal: “August 5th, 2023. I am going to marry Fiona McHugh.” But the first step towards a relationship was still a long way off. The threads would perhaps meet one day, but for now the Artist’s hand bid them stay. It was a tumultuous series of months. Kyle continued to have his eye on Fiona and continuously worked on the courage to ask her out. It was not uncommon to find Fiona and Kyle alone together at lunch time when their bosses, Brett and Jake, would suddenly have lunch meetings that would take them out of the office for a few hours. One day, Kyle went home and wrote, “August 9th, 2023. Spent a few hours hammering nails with Fiona while Jake had to take a long phone call. Sacred tasks and glory days!” The week of January 14th, 2024 dragged on. Kyle had become so nervous about asking Fiona out that he became physically ill. Unable to walk more than a few steps before laying down, Kyle knew something had to give. To give him confidence, Kyle purchased a bottle of cologne and a watch for the first time in his life. And so it came to pass that Kyle asked Fiona out on a date to which she responded, “umm…I guess so.” The enthusiasm was palpable. However, Fiona later had a change of heart and decided against going on a date at all. Week after excruciating week went by while Kyle and Fiona continued to work six feet apart. Where glorious conversation once clouded the walls, now silence hovered over the office. Eventually, Kyle asked her out again and Fiona said yes. On February 24, they had their first date-- ice skating and frozen yogurt. The rest is history. Whether doing homework at Inklings, going on walks at golden hour, or cooking dinner, everything they did was of one mind and heart. That June, they took a walk during a golden Del Valle sunset and discussed potentially getting married in the future. Kyle and Fiona have come a long way from the stumbling date proposal and the hesitating “I guess so.” Kyle proposed on a golden Del Valle evening in May 2025, which was met with a confident “Of course!” from Fiona. Butterflies have replaced the ill nerves, confidence has replaced the hesitancy, and love has overcome. The Artist’s hand has wed them together, intertwining their lives in a stunning act of providence. On May 2, 2026, all shall be fulfilled just as it is written, “I am going to marry Fiona McHugh.”
