Morris Island Lighthouse is surrounded by water, so you can't get inside, but the view and walk to get there is absolutely breathtaking. You can walk on the graffiti path or along the beach about a 1/2 mile from where you can park. Park in the cul-de-sac at the end of East Ashley, make sure all of your wheels are off the road to avoid a ticket and follow the path north-east. Bring your camera and a towel. *Do NOT get in the water near the lighthouse, there are very dangerous currents* Best time to go is at sunrise!
Enjoy a long walk or spend the day on the beach at the Folly Beach County Park. There is an entrance fee - check the website before going. Some our favorite sites to see while there are the wish tree (pictured above) and walking "around the bend" at low tide. To get to the wish tree - park at the very end of the lot (furthest from the entrance) and walk along the beach near the dune (continuing away from the entrance). On the right, you will see The Wish Tree, covered with shells hung on the branches and hundreds of wishes. Continue along the coast and follow the bend to the right for more wonderful sights of Folly's Coast. There are restrooms and showers available at The Dunes House. The Dunes House upper deck also provides one of Folly's best sunset locations.
Grab some bun cha and a beer (or three) at one of Folly's most beloved outdoor spaces. It's the "Cheers" of Folly, and the locals that visit are devout Chico Feo-ins, but travelers and tourists are always welcome. If you're lucky, one of the local musicians will be on stage to serenade you! Chico Feo has some of the best people watching on the island. Because Chico Feo is all outdoors, it is a fare weather location and will be closed if its raining, so plan accordingly.
For an unpretentious seafood meal, check out a local favorite - Bowen's Island. It's far from fancy, and you serve yourself, but trust us, it is delicious! If you can, snag a seat with a view over the water and enjoy the view while you eat. The line to get in can be long, but it moves quick, so don't feel daunted by the crowd. You will order at the counter and wait for your food to pick up, so don't be afraid to send the rest of your party to hunt for the best seat in the house while you grab the food. Flip flops and t-shirts are perfectly acceptable in this low key restaurant! *Only open for dinner*
If you want to work up an appetite before heading over to Bowen's Island Restaurant, there are plenty of ways to do it at Charleston Outdoor Adventures. Between Kayak tours and Paddleboards, you are sure to find something to fill your adventurer heart. We recommend bringing a disposable underwater camera or a waterproof bag to wear around your neck so you can snap some pictures. Don't be surprised if you see a pod of dolphins on your tour!
Rent a surf board and try your hand, or feet at catching a wave on a surfboard. The best places to paddle out for beginners is at West 3rd Street, for the more experienced, East 18th Street. Ocean Surf Shop also has Paddleboards and Bodyboards and wetsuits for rent. Everything is rented first come first serve, so get there early! There is plenty of parking in the lot next to the shop, so don't worry about finding a parking spot, since it is reserved Ocean Surf Shop parking.
Rent chairs and umbrellas for your day at the beach! Leave all the work to them, just simply call and make a reservation to have your chairs set up on the beach. If it's for the beach day, mention that you are with the Colbert group.
