“Meet Cute”

July 2012

Our story is definitely one that could be in the movies. From meeting when we were 12, to becoming best friends, to finally dating when we went to college. Our “meet cute” begins in my (Macy) hometown of Scott City, Kansas on my parents' farm. Keegan and his baseball team came to Scott City for a tournament. It was common for families in the community to host kids in the tournament and entertain them during their stay. My mom (Terri) always makes a comment that of course, we were hosting the team that ended up winning the tournament, meaning they had to stay with us the whole week and we had to find new ways to entertain them. I must say, Keegan was by far the kindest boy out of the group. He would always play with my little brother (Jaren) whenever he asked. I always remember telling Jaren to ask the boys if they wanted to jump on the trampoline with us, and Keegan was the only one who would come and play. Keegan says he had a huge crush on me and would hang out with Jaren for the chance to hang out with me. Years passed until we spoke again, but during junior year of high school, I reached out to Keegan via Instagram and asked how I knew him (fully knowing how I knew him). We continued to talk and became best friends in high school. Finally, we started dating when we moved to college at Kansas State University (Go Cats!).

The Proposal (Her Side)

April 10th, 2021

The weekend of our engagement, my best friend (and now Maid of Honor), Madison spent the weekend with us in Manhattan so she could take some graduation pictures. Madison was adamant about getting her nails done, saying she had an important banquet she needed them done for. Keegan and I made plans earlier in the week to go pick out a puppy, so we all packed in the car and drove to choose our future puppy, Kona! On our way to El Dorado, I looked at my nails and thought they were actually pretty bad, but only the right hand was really messed up. After picking out our beautiful Australian Shepherd, we drove back to Manhattan and decided to do some shopping. I chose a new dress and after getting myself ready, we went to Keegan and I's favorite spot on Tuttle Lake and started taking pictures. Madison showed us a pose that she wanted us to do and that must have been Keegan's cue because right after that, he got down on one knee! I was so surprised (and I am so happy I didn't catch onto the little details leading up to that moment because it made the surprise so worth it!) all I kept saying was "No, really??" and then he asked me to marry him! If you are reading this, you probably already know what my answer was ;)

The Proposal (His Side)

April 10th, 2021

I had the ring, I knew who I wanted my photographer to be, and I had Jon’s permission. Only problem was that I had no idea how to ask the question or where to do it at. Luckily, a few weeks before I was going to ask her, we stumbled upon a beautiful, hidden away beach by the lake. I knew it was the spot for me to ask Macy. I asked her best friend, Madison Shapland, to be my photographer and we started planning. Creating a story for Madison to come down and make Macy get her nails done was a challenge. Once we solved our problems, we picked a date. The day Madison came down, the two of them went to get their nails done, they came back without them done because the line was too long for Macy. I started to worry because I think Macy would have told me to try again if I proposed without her nails being done. Luckily Madison knew this too and forced Macy into the nail salon the next morning. Madison offered to take graduation photos for us which was the original plan to trick Macy into going to the lake, but last-minute Macy said no…..I stressed more. In a last-ditch effort I told Macy I wanted pictures at the lake (which should have tipped her off because I hate pictures) and luckily she said we could. On the way out there we decided to get a snack and while sitting in the car, Macy brings up that her nails are all messed up and look terrible, I about lost it. Madison and I started texting each other, freaking out because we couldn’t do it if her nails were bad. AND THEN OUT OF NOWHERE Macy says, “okay, my left nails aren’t too bad, the right ones are horrible.” The plan was all of a sudden back on by some miracle. We eat, drive, take photos, and then Madison comes up with a “pose” for us to do which was our signal. I got down on a knee and Macy’s reaction is “Keegan, stand up, that isn’t the pose at all.” Then, she realized what was happening and the first word was “no”….luckily it came out of disbelief and excitement, not absolute rejection. And here we are. The end.
