How We Met

January 2014 | As Told By Nick Feipel

Erin and I met at one of the most romantic places in the world - the basement of the Sigma Chi fraternity house at Ball State University, during a toga party. It was the beginning of second semester and I was bartending for the night. When she walked up and asked for a shot of Green Apple Skol, I knew it was love. We spent the rest of the night dancing to John Mellencamp, Kid Rock, and Ben Folds. This lead to our first date at Taco Bell and only two short weeks later we were dating. Since then we’ve taken many trips together and live with our two dogs just outside of Indy.

The Proposal

June 29th, 2020 | Sunset Beach, NC

The story of our engagement starts where it all began, Ball State University. Erin and I joined Erin's parents at Ball State's family weekend tailgate before going back to the Sigma Chi house where Erin's little brother, Jeff, is now a member. After the weekend in Muncie we went back to Indy and while Erin and Jody were cooking dinner, Gary and I were in the garage enjoying a few cocktails and I asked his permission to marry his daughter, and thankfully, he said yes. A few months later, I went ring shopping with Erin's mom, Jody. The diamond in her ring has been passed down from her great grandmother. We picked a setting and sent the diamond off to be set. I was lucky enough to get the call from the jeweler that the ring was ready to be picked up on the last day that the store would be open before the COVID-19 shut down. So I high-tailed it all the way from my business meeting in Southern Indiana up to Carmel to get the ring before the jewelry store closed, indefinitely. Jody and I decided the best way to propose would be at the annual 4th of July beach trip at Sunset Beach, NC with 75 of The Miller's closest friends. We all dressed up for “family pictures” to make sure we were all looking our best. After eating dinner I asked Erin to come back to the beach house with me to “make a drink.” This gave us an opportunity to be alone so I could ask her to be my wife. After she said yes, we ventured back over to the party house to find the entire beach crew waiting to greet us with cheers, champagne, and dancing.
