How We Met

4.20.2017

One dark, cold, lonely Tuesday night, fearful he may be destined for life as a lone wolf, Ryan opened an application on his phone that was quite the craze at the time. That application was called Tinder. While many around the world used this application for nights of sinful activity, Ryan used it instead in the way every other antisocial Millennial used it: as a tool to meet people without leaving the comfort of his bed. After hours of swiping nothing but left, he came across a profile that made his heart palpitate, made his jaw drop, made him sit up in his bed, made his thumb swipe right so fast it was as if it was afraid the profile may disappear if it didn't. That profile, of course, was that of a Miss Teresa Beltran. And just as quickly as he had swiped came the message with those four magical words: You have a match!

Our First Date

4/20/2017

After two weeks of messaging back and forth, Ryan finally garnered the courage to ask Teresa out on a real-life, in-person, face-to-face, in the flesh date. As he did, he remembered two pieces of advice had recently read in an incredibly sophisticated memoir written by Aziz Ansari; also known as Tom Haverford in the hit TV show Parks and Rec. The first piece of advice was this: When it comes to a first date, do drinks. The second piece of advice was only to go on dates in the nighttime. Ryan, not being much of a drinker, found himself in quite a predicament. But then it hit him. He opened Tinder, clicked on his messages with Teresa, and typed out, 'Would you provide me the privilege of joining me this Thursday night at the local teahouse?" To which she replied, "Sir, it would be my utmost honor." And so that Thursday night, at precisely 8 o'clock in the PM, these two anxious, love-seeking Millennials met at the lovely teahouse. The establishment, being a place of caffeine and the time being quite late, was nearly entirely desolate. Only one table other than their own was occupied. Teresa and Ryan, claiming a booth against the outer perimeter, ordered two kettles of tea: one fruity, the other earthy. For over an hour these two developing lovebirds peeled back the layers of their incredibly thick facades, a process they continue to do even to this day, as they threw back cup after cup of hot tea. And after emptying both kettles, while not yet emptying their desire for conversation, they decided to take their date on the road. Side by side, they walked up the downtown Visalia streets, then they turned around walked up. But still there was a desire to talk more, and so they did several more laps before finally concluding the night with a goodbye and a desired kiss not taken. "I'll save that for another date," thought Ryan, "there is certainly going to be more." And more dates, there certainly were.
