A NOLA style reception is not your standard seated dinner, but consists of heavily passed items throughout the evening and open action stations. This allows guests to move freely about the reception space - dancing, eating, drinking, and repeating as they please. Seating is left open for guests to choose their own seats and tables as needed.

The newly married couple leads the way, holding decorated umbrellas or parasols. The guests and anyone else who joins in the celebration are referred to as the "second line". They form a line behind the band and couple, dancing and strutting to the lively music with handkerchiefs.
