Mia's best friend, April received a butt dial from Brandon on April 9, 2015, which happened to be April's birthday. April didn't pick up, but thought it odd that Brandon was calling her, as he had not called her in years. April and Brandon attended Michigan State together almost 15 years prior. She finally got around to returning his call and found that he was back in Chicago after working in various states over the years. She asked if he was single, and when he said that he was, she asked if he wanted to meet her best friend, Mia, who also resided in Chicago. He immediately asked, "What's wrong with her?" April's reply was, "Nothing, she's great!" Meanwhile, April contacted Mia and asked if she wanted to meet her old friend from college. Mia had been on a string of questionable dates and just wasn't up for another disappointment. April convinced Mia to allow her to share Mia's number with Brandon with, "Just talk to him. If you don't like him, it's not a big deal. I don't talk to him that often anyway." Well the following Saturday afternoon on April 18, Brandon gave Mia a call. They hit it off pretty well and after talking over the next week, decided to meet in person after he got back from his pending trip. On Thursday, May 7, they met at Square One for an after work drink. They haven't spent most weekends thereafter apart for over five years. On October 2, 2020, Brandon got down on one knee and asked for Mia's hand in marriage, and the new chapter in their lives began.
