One of Sam's friends, Stephanie, was dating one of Derek's friends, Jon. One day Derek was having a party and Stephanie asked Sam to come so she would not be the only girl. The pair met that night at the party and instantly hit it off. Sam went off to college and the two talked periodically over the years. About four years later the two decided to take their friendship to the next level and the rest is history.

It was a cold, snowy Sunday in December when Derek prosposed to me. The Green Bay Packers were playing an afternoon game that day and earlier in the week we had made plans to go down to Ej's (our favorite bar) to watch the game. The whole way there I kept complaining that no one was going to be out in that weather and that we might as well stay home. To my surprise that was anything but the case. As I opened the inside door to the bar I heard instant screaming and in the middle of the bar was my family holding signs that read "Samantha Barbian will you marry me?" I turned around to find Derek behind me down on one knee holding a ring box in his hand. I of course said "yes." The funny thing was my sister was hiding under a table so I wouldn't see her videotaping the whole thing. ~Sam~
