We connected first on a dating app, Bumble. We had daily conversations for a few weeks before agreeing to meet in person the day after Mother's Day. We met at Del Monte Shopping Center. First having a meal at Lalla Grill, we chatted, getting to know each other. I talked about my new job at Monterey Bay Community Power and my work with ground squirrels at CSUMB. David spoke of his family business and growing up in Monterey. We then went to the final showing of 'The Avengers: Infinity Wars'. I fell asleep, and David was certain that the date was going nowhere. But who can blame me? I was seeing the movie for a third time and it had been a long day. After the movie, he walked me to my car. We kissed and any uncertainty either of us may have felt was gone. From that moment on we were inseparable.
We were on a trip to Disneyland to see our nieces' dance performance in their holiday parade. We had arrived a day early to spend some time in the park together before both our families arrived to see the performance. We spent the day as one does in the happiest place on earth. Waiting in line, riding the rides, snacking on churros and popcorn. That day we had a reservation at the Blue Bayou restaurant, which neither of us had had the occasion to go to before. We arrived and were seated at a table waterside. As we waited for our meal we watched Pirates of the Caribbean boats with happy patrons and listened to the sounds of the banjo floating over the water. Our meal arrived and we chatted as we started our meal. Silently and suddenly, David was on one knee with a pearl ring asking me to make him the happiest man alive and marry him. I of course said yes, we kissed, and I placed the engagement ring on my finger. We finished our meal and went to enjoy the rest of our day. That night we met our parents and siblings for a meal in Downtown Disney and shared the wonderful news. We couldn't have known then that the best laid plans we would work on over the coming months would be dashed. However, nothing could stop us from exchanging our vows.
It started as a cloudy blustery day in October. The COVID shutdown had been going for 7 months. Being shut in our house together for that time had only strengthened our resolve to commit ourselves to each other. The night before, our dear friends, Lindsay Dow and Jan Trojan came down to Monterey. Lindsay stayed with me while David went to stay with Jan at a neighborhood hotel. The morning was spent decorating the porch for the small celebration later that night, picking up flowers, and getting ready. As we approached the beach a mere mile from our house, the sun came out and the wind settled. We were met by our officiant Rob Shaw and we walked onto the beach. The rest was a blur. We said our vows to each other with tears of joy in our eyes and smiles that beamed. Our dog Dally carried the rings on her collar that were lovingly placed on each others hands. A couple of onlookers clapped as we kissed for the first time as Mr. and Mrs.. We took pictures to commemorate the day as the sun set and the small party headed back to our porch for a piece of cake and a toast.
