The customary Pithi/Haldi ceremony performed with the Bride & Groom. Turmeric or Haldi is a common flavour in South Asia & is known to possess healing, beautification, & purification properties. The mustard hue is auspicious in representing a life of prosperity for the couple. Guests take turns placing a small amount of Haldi on the Bride & Groom offering their blessings & singing traditional songs pertaining to the ritual. In the Ismaili tradition of the Pithi ceremony, once formal application is complete, the Groom’s Best Man takes the Bride’s place for an initiation ceremony. Both put on goggles to protect their eyes before family members (quite literally) douse the two in eggs, flour, condiments, & any leftover lunch they can find.
