On February 12, we woke up early in anticipation of our planned Camelback Mountain hike. We talked about being excited to finally be climbing this mountain but nervous. I (Kate) was nervous because this was going to be the most difficult hike of our trip and I thought Robbie was too. We pushed on, made it to the trail head and got started. The hike was challenging, had amazing views of Phoenix and was generally like all of our other hikes. Until it wasn't. We passed a helicopter pad built into the mountain, because they actually have to make that many emergency rescues! Then the terrain changed from walking uphill switchbacks to hands and knees scrambling over rocks. We had just finished skirting the side of a huge rock where we had just a narrow space to walk without sliding down the mountain when I looked up and saw the next rock we had to get over. I told Robbie I thought it was time to turn around, not because I was worried about going up but because I was worried about having to get back down. He convinced me to keep going because we needed to see the view from the top, even though I thought what we were currently seeing was better than a hospital room. We made it! And it was freezing! It was so cold and windy that we hid on a lower ledge to grab some snacks. Before we headed back down Robbie wanted to go back to the very top. We snapped a few pictures but it was very cold so I thought we were in a hurry. I turned my back to him for just a minute to refill our water bottles. When I turned around, I saw my best friend holding a beautiful ring on one knee. I think the view was worth it.
