How to Lose a Ring in 48 Hours

Don't throw snowballs in Colorado with your engagement ring, just don't.

Cade had it all planned out; for months he knew exactly where and how he would propose. The young couple would plan a ski trip, with their favorite people in attendance, to Telluride, CO. Only it wasn't just a ski trip, a ring Cade had custom-made would sit in the interior pocket of his coat for the plane ride there, and the first few days of the trip. Fabi's parents and brother were awaiting the day of the proposal in Mountain Village, CO. On the third day, after some shopping downtown with her future mother-in-law and future bridesmaids, Fabi takes the gondola to meet Cade and everyone for dinner. A photographer ambushed them on the way to the restaurant, "Can I get a quick picture of the two of you?". Fabi, hungry, and ready for her next margarita replies curtly, "No, thank you." Cade pulls Fabi in for a postcard-type picture alongside the Christmas decorations on the square. The camera is flashing as Cade pulls out that ring from the inside pocket of his coat. It turns out Cade had planned for a lot more than just a ski trip. The next day was indeed, full of skiing, or pizzaing depending on who you were. On the following day, after brunch, the slew arrived at their home where a snowball fight commenced. Fabi throws a hay-maker, hits Juanito, and runs inside for protection and heated floors. Only something felt wrong, her fingers, although numb from the cold felt different than they had the last couple of days. Instantly, her heart races and her stomach drops, her hands search repeatedly through her pockets but to no avail. The ring was gone. The night fell over the tiny town of Mountain Village, CO, and brought along with it freezing winds. Only a gondola ride away, it was a stark night in the downtown square illuminated by only the cozy, warm restaurants and shops that offered little refuge to the three individuals and their dying iPhone flashlights. Fabi, Cade, and Makenna scurried the sidewalks, searching frantically for what they hoped would be a bright reflection amidst the muddy snow. The three split. Cade's search was cut short as he was forced to find refuge inside a store to charge his now-dead phone. Makenna stormed every storefront asking for their surveillance footage from earlier that day. Fabi although persistent in her search, was beginning to lose hope that she would feel that ring on her 4th finger on her left hand again. The three rode back home on the gondola in silence, and the crew back home anxiously awaited their arrival as their search had not yielded a ring either. The family, now battered from the cold bitter night shared their last dinner together. The parents embraced the young couple and offered their best condolences, it was in fact a loss. That night was the hardest. Upon their return, the couple was met with many congratulations, and to Fabi's surprise, all people cared about was seeing the gosh-darn ring. Now, a few months had gone by, still no thoughts of a wedding, instead reparations of an engagement. Until one day. Cade is working from home when he gets a call from Shae. The ring was found at the home the family shared, amidst the melted snow, the precise location where the snowball fight had ensued. The next family who stayed at the home found the ring and were not interested in any reward, they were just happy the ring would make it back to the young couple.
