If you're planning on renting a car, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is only about a two hour drive away and often has cheaper flights available.

Metropolitan Transit System - Trolley
We've used the trolley service many times since moving to San Diego, and it provides a great way to travel around the city. The trolley also travels to and from the San Diego International Airport.
