Shouts of glee fill the skating rink. I want to learn how to do a forward crossover. In figure skating, a crossover is a basic stroking technique to build momentum and speed. Little did I know that my curiosity would propel me into a relationship. I look down, glancing at his black skating boots right in front of me. Dressed in black sweatpants and long-sleeves, Ethan Reynolds faces me and places his hands out to hold mine so I wouldn’t fall down. He asks, “May I? …Here’s how you do a crossover.” In that moment, he crosses over to my heart. Friends since July 2018, Ethan and I have experienced life and ministry together: Spiritual Life Board teammates, Dallas Seminary colleagues (and graduates!), hiking buddies, figure skating enthusiasts, homeschool survivors, and Third Culture Kids. We sang in the same musical “Sermon on the Mount” and had singing parts in the same stanza in the same song, but in different churches. Ethan is a Navigator kid who grew up in the inner city in Chicago, Illinois. I am a Cru staff kid who never settled in one place. I have always wanted to marry my best friend—the person who makes life real, even when it’s difficult. On March 13, 2021, after two years of dating, Ethan presented me with another “May I?” — “Charissa, will you marry me?” I could only answer with tears of joy. As we glean from the Psalm of Ethan the Ezrahite, we remember, “Faithful love is built up forever. You established Your faithfulness in the heavens” (Ps. 89:2). Faithful love takes time and patience. We praise God for the blessing of your presence in our life. You are crossing over with us into this new phase of life.
