Clingstone is a house built in 1905, perched atop a small, rocky island in a grouping called "The Dumplings" in Narragansett Bay, off Jamestown, Rhode Island. Often also called “the house on the rock” or, simply, “The Rock,” Clingstone is an off-the-grid, rustic, quirky, yet majestic house, surrounded by water, with commanding views of Narragansett Bay and Newport harbor. On arrival at the Jamestown Boatyard (60 Dumplings Drive, Jamestown, RI 02835) Guests will be greeted by a parking/boat helper. Because parking at the boatyard/dock area is not available, drivers will drop off passengers and be directed to a nearby, secure off-site parking area. Drivers can choose to walk or shuttle the short distance back to the dock.
Clingstone is a short boat trip from the Dumplings dock. On a fair summer’s day, the trip is magnificent. If, however, wind and weather are less than favorable, please note that the short open-boat trip can have its moments and, as such, please consider the forecast and plan your attire and weather gear accordingly, particularly in the event of precipitation. See also, “Weather” and “Attire” below.
We’ve ordered up a beautiful summer’s day on Narragansett Bay. However, should that somehow get mixed up, accounting for the day’s weather is a must. The house is large enough to accommodate the event despite most conditions. Getting across the water, however, is the trick. Thus, if the forecast is iffy, dress accordingly and plan, if you have them, on hats, slickers, rain ponchos, beach towels, umbrellas, or whatever you have to keep dry on the ride over. We will provide light rain ponchos for all, so don’t bother packing foul-weather gear if you’re traveling.
Think beach and island. California, Hawaii, the Vineyard, Block Island. All things considered (weather, boat, Clingstone’s rustic charm), practical, comfortable, summer-casual, and weather-savvy ought to be top priorities for sartorial choices. Outside of playing dress-up, can’t remember ever seeing gents in coats and ties and ladies in gowns on Clingstone. We certainly won’t be sporting a train and a tux.
Clingstone has an abundance of natural beauty and jaw-dropping views. Its connection to the water and everything on and passing through inspires and connects to a deep sense of unity with the planet. Being off-grid means: electricity powered by a rooftop windmill, composting toilets, potable water hauled up daily in 5-gallon containers from shore, and recyclables and refuse taken off nightly, usually with the last boat. Nothing is lacking and you will be taken care of, dear guest, with tasty foods, drink, music, and the very best company.
Outside of a DW Collector’s Series drum kit outfitted with a full set of Zildjian K cymbals, we have all the material objects we need, and that a house could hold. We’re not registered and, while the choice of a wedding gift is yours alone, if you would like to know what, in our heart-of-hearts, we would truly appreciate, it is this: help in our savings for a down-payment on a home. Anything from $1 to several hundred shares of AAPL, AMZN, MSFT, FB, or GOOG would melt our hearts. Really.
Newport is great, but on the very high-end of price and demand in the summer season. Middletown and Portsmouth are the next towns up-island and are more reasonable to consider. Even better, however, is to know that, Rhode Island being small as it is, most everything is a fairly short drive. Tim works in Providence and can attest to its short commute to Jamestown, its wonderful hotels, restaurants, attractions, and entertainment. The coastal and bay communities west of Jamestown (Narragansett, North and South Kingstown, Wakefield, Wickford, East Greenwich) are minutes away and all offer great lodgings and restaurants. Of course, for those who venture outside traditional hotel and B&B bookings, all these areas have various lodgings from houses to rooms offered by private hosts on your favorite internet rent-share service. A list of area hotels appears at the accommodations tab and will be updated periodically.
Arrival and Mingling. The Day begins with guests arriving at the Dumplings anytime from 2pm on. Guests will be greeted by a boat helper and taken over to Clingstone for mingling and light refreshment before the ceremony. Wedding and Reception. Ceremony will be about 4pm, followed by simple, but delicious food and drink served buffet-style. Music and dancing (of course).
While, ideally, the party would never end, the reality of daylight and tides, dictates that all guests will be taken ashore by dusk (around 8pm). The boat will, however, be available at all times to ferry guests ashore at any time during the day.
