On July 4th, 2022, Julia, just beginning her second year of residency, was surfing at Black’s Beach with her roommate Mel and Mel’s then-fiancé, Mikey. That morning, Nate had planned to surf elsewhere, but when his buddy bailed, he made a last-minute call to head to Black’s instead. Out in the lineup, Nate did what he does best—not surf, but rather strike up a conversation with a stranger who happened to be Mikey. After a brief chat, Mikey introduced him to Julia. They talked, judged each other’s surfing abilities, and eventually exchanged numbers when they got back to their cars. A few days later, their first date – a picnic at Sunset Cliffs – sealed the deal and the rest is history!
