How We Met

It all started with a dating app called Bumble. On Bumble, women make the first move. To be matched, you would have to swipe right on a profile you have interest in. But the only way for a match to happen, is if both ends are interested. Once the match has been made, both sides have 24 hours to respond, or the match will disappear and your chance to connect will be gone. On February 4th, 2017, I (Mena) decided to do my rounds of finding a match. I stumbled upon Nick’s profile and decided to swipe right based on his photos he posted. After swiping right, we matched! I sent him a quick message to start the conversation. After almost 24 hours of no response from Nick, I had a feeling that I would have to continue searching for another match. Until the last few hours of losing the conversation, I finally received a message from him after the Super Bowl LI game between the Patriots and Falcons. I got excited and knew my first conversation with him would be about the Super Bowl, which it was. After the first few days of matching, we continued to chat, but they were short conversations. Then next thing, Nick quickly asked me out on a date. Since I did not know much or anything about him, I expressed to him that I was not comfortable meeting him so soon. So, he sent a long paragraph of himself on what he does and his hobbies. After reading his little biography, I agreed to have our first date. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I had a Galentine’s brunch/movie date with my sisters and cousins in Santana Row. I decided to meet Nick at Santana Row after my girl’s day out on February 12, 2017. I was so nervous of meeting Nick that I had to get some drinks to cut the edge off before meeting him. As time got closer to our date, I sent him a message on where we should meet, but I didn’t get any response. I thought I was going to be stood up by him, but Nick responded a few hours later. We ended up deciding to meet at Sino’s for a drink. So, I walked into the restaurant then saw this good-looking guy sitting at the bar. He was cute and had a great smile. I could not believe that I was on a date with this guy. We both ordered a few drinks, talked, and shared some laughs. While enjoying our cocktails, we decided to grab dinner at Straits. We continued talking, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company. We did not want our date to end and wanted to continue spending more time with each other that evening. So, we walked over to Rosie McCanns for more alcoholic beverages. Yes, we like to drink and can drink, but it was getting late, and we both felt a little tipsy. Before we walked out of Rosie's, I asked if we could get dessert. Across Rosie McCanns was a Smitten Ice Cream stand. Even though we got our own ice cream cones, at this time, we were so comfortable with each other that we ended up sharing our ice cream with one another and had our first kiss. Nick and I will say that we sure were “smitten” by each other that night. Since our first date, we have spent every weekend with each other, and to this very day, we plan to spend all our weekends for the rest of our lives together. (Bottom photo: our first date photo)
