The area has many properties listed on Airbnb. Please note that we recommend staying in the village. We enjoy East Aurora because of its walkable and charming Main Street and we want to share that experience with our guests.
Travel Note
The Arts & Crafts Movement was an aesthetic and philosophical crusade that rose up in response to the Machine Age and the mass production that was emerging in the latter half of the 19th century—techniques that ignored both the skilled hands of a craftsman and the natural beauty of the materials used. The countermovement began in Europe and as it spread to America, Buffalo emerged as its epicenter. Inspired by William Morris, Elbert G. Hubbard acquired a printing press of his own and established the Roycroft Press in East Aurora, New York. Within a few years it would grow into the Roycroft Shops (1895-1938) boasting a bindery, leather, furniture and metalwork shops, and a stained-glass studio -- in its prime employing 500+ craftspeople including women and minorities. Taken from a quote by John Ruskin, their creed focused around “a belief in working with the head, hand and heart and mixing enough play with the work so that every task is pleasurable and makes for health and happiness.”
