The Santa Catalina Arch is one of the most iconic and photographed spots in Antigua Guatemala—you’ve probably seen it in pictures even if you didn’t realize it! Built in the 1600s, it originally connected a convent so nuns could pass between buildings in privacy. Today, it’s known for its bright yellow color, charming clock, and postcard-perfect views.

While exploring Antigua, we recommend visiting ChocoMuseo, a cultural chocolate experience where you can learn about Mayan cacao traditions, make your own chocolate, and taste Guatemala’s rich chocolate heritage. It’s a meaningful way to connect with Guatemalan culture and history. For guests looking for a more adventurous experience, a hike up Pacaya Volcano is one of the most popular day trips from Antigua. The trek takes you through dramatic volcanic landscapes with sweeping views of surrounding mountains and active geothermal areas. On clear days, you can even see nearby volcanoes and, roast marshmallows, or eat pizza baked over natural volcanic heat. It’s a moderately challenging hike, but very rewarding—and a memorable way to experience Guatemala’s unique natural beauty. There are different options to explore the volcano, including hiking by foot, horseback riding, mountain biking, or ATV tours, depending on how adventurous you’re feeling.
If you have extra time, a day trip to Lake Atitlán is highly recommended. About 25 minutes from Antigua Guatemala via boat, this stunning lake is surrounded by volcanoes and colorful villages. Boats typically stop running around 7:30pm, so plan your schedule accordingly.
