We met on a dig in Utqiaġvik, Alaska and got to know each other lying on the tundra, staring at the sun when we definitely should have been sleeping. Instead of a first date we worked long, mostly sunny days for four weeks and slept side by side in sleeping bags in a giant tent with seven friends, talking and laughing so hard that our faces hurt, and sending countless zoom-ins via air-drop. Jonathan planned to leave in the middle of the dig, but unexpectedly found a way to come back for the last week because "the archaeology" was just so cool. After Alaska, we dated long-distance for a year, mailing each other letters and mementos that ranged from very romantic to the weirdest things you can imagine giving anyone.
