In March 2017, Jonathan and Brian were traveling around Europe. Meanwhile, Erika took time off from work and was backpacking through Europe to celebrate her birthday. On March 12 (the day after Erika's birthday), Jonathan and his brother's third and final night, and Erika's only night in Amsterdam, Tina Turner's "You're Simply the Best" playing loudly outside lured Erika into the Old Sailor pub. Of all the bars in Amsterdam, Jonathan and Brian decided to wander into the Old Sailor shortly after. While enjoying a beer (or two), a table across the bar began singing happy birthday, and Jonathan joined the majority of the other Old Sailor patrons in singing happy birthday to Erika. Jonathan and Erika looked at each other from across the bar and went on their separate ways a little while later. As fate would have it, Brian and Jonathan went to the airport next evening looking forward to the next country when Brian saw Erika from far at the airport in Amsterdam. Yep! Among all countries and flights, they were on same flight to Barcelona! Upon arrival in Barcelona, Jonathan was sitting next to the baggage claim carousel waiting for their luggage when they looked at each other and Erika said to him, "Do I know you from somewhere? You look very familiar." Realizing where it was he knew her from, Jonathan looked at her and said, "I'm pretty sure I sang happy birthday to you in Amsterdam last night." Coincidentally, they were staying near each other in Barcelona, so Jonathan suggested they could share a cab. Before dropping her off, Jonathan asked for Erika's number, and ultimately they ending up meeting up all 3-days in Barcelona. Erika took her flight to Italy. Jonathan kept on texting Erika every day during the rest of their travels through Europe, and began visiting each other in New York and Colorado respectively upon returning to the States. The first time they saw each other in the USA, Jonathan formally asked Erika to be his girlfriend. And the rest is history...
