Please note that due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our wedding to September 19, 2021. We will be sending a new set of Save the Dates and Invitations for another reminder.
Julian’s Perspective: Erika and I first met online in late 2016. Erika initially ignored my first message. I tried one more time and she luckily responded. I asked, “do you like Korean food?” And Erika said “no.” So I was like, “wow… I don’t know what to say…” With such clear chemistry from the start, she asked to go on date with me. I agreed and made plans to eat at a burger bar. On the first date, she insisted on splitting the check. That was the first and last time we ever split the check. By early 2017, Erika was head over heels for me and wanted to make it “facebook official.” I reluctantly agreed and so immediately Erika declared to her friends and coworkers that she quote-unquote “trapped” my ass Ali Wong-style. Eventually, after realizing what a catch I was, Erika moved in to my apartment and threw away a lot of my good stuff. I miss that stuff but luckily I love her more. Erika’s Perspective: Julian and I first met online in late 2016. So 2016 was actually a great year for my single self. When I went to a Halloween party that year, I met a girl who suggested I try meeting someone online with the same app she used, Coffee Meets Bagel. I never used dating apps before so I tried it and Julian was actually the first guy I ever met online. Julian messaged me twice to get me to notice him. My friend Hannah and I had a conversation about dating older men and so I was intrigued that he was 8 years older than me. We met up at a burger joint. I didn’t think our first date was anything special. All I could remember was that Julian wasn’t bad. From the very first time we met, Julian has always managed to make me happy and exceed my expectations. To be clear, I am very hard to please. I was raised by my grandfather who would always say “What Erika wants, Erika gets.” Also, Julian's story is totally skewed. He asked me to go on a date with him. I always split the bill until we were officially together. In January 2017, he asked me to be his girlfriend.
When Julian asked Erika how she wanted to be proposed to, she laid down four rules: Rule 1 – Nails must be properly manicured. Rule 2 – The ring must be the correct size. Rule 3 – The engagement should be a surprise. Rule 4 – Have photographer onsite to capture the moment. On April 5, 2019, Julian brought Erika to Millennium Park pretending they needed to cut through to reach their parked car. When they reached the midpoint of the bridge in the park, he stopped and handed her something. When Erika looked at it closely, it was a set of new AirPods engraved with “E. Shin” along with her phone number. With her back turned to Julian, she turned back around to see him on one knee, holding out a pear-shaped diamond ring. Erika immediately burst into tears as Julian asked if she would marry him and she said “yes!” As soon as she said yes, Julian’s photographer popped out of his disguise as a foreign tourist and snapped more pictures of the couple as Julian easily slipped the ring on Erika's well-manicured fingers. After it was all said and done, Julian went home and took a well deserved nap.
