Question

When should I arrive?

Answer

Whenever is best for you! Although Laura and I have the most availability to hang out the week of the wedding, as we will be leaving on our honeymoon the following Monday March 10th to Patagonia & Rio de Janeiro! As newlyweds receive two weeks of honeymoon vacation by law in Spain, we are taking full advantage! So you're aware, we are looking into the option of setting up a tapas meet up on Thursday night March 6 but it is yet to be confirmed.

Question

How do I get to the city center from the airport?

Answer

There are taxi stands outside of the exit of the airport, with a flat rate of 30 euros to take you to the city center. In addition, there are multiple train lines and buses which take you into town as well.

Question

How do I get around the city?

Answer

Madrid is extremely walkable with an extensive, reliable and clean subway and bus network. Using Google Maps, all available bus and subway routes can be found when looking for directions to reach your destination. In addition to public transport, taxis are easy to catch as there is a small army of them driving around the city. Uber, Bolt and Cabify are options as well.

Question

Do I need cash?

Answer

Most likely not. I have not carried or needed cash for years as every shop/bar/restaurant accepts card via Apple Pay, tap to pay or chip. Even the taxis, subway and bus accept payments by card. Tip: Always select to pay in Euros! Your card issuer almost always gives you a better conversion rate

Question

Is it safe to walk around at night?

Answer

Madrid is extremely safe and there are tons of people walking around all hours of the night as Spaniards stay out very late. As the phrase here goes, "If you're home before 3am on the weekend, you didn't really go out, you just went to dinner" Violent crime is low but with that said it is best to watch out for pick pockets and street scams. If someone is offering you a "free bracelet" or flowers on the street, it's definitely not free and could be a distraction for their friend to come up and pick pocket you. It's also best practice to not leave your belongings on the table while eating or drinking as it's easy for someone to grab and run.

Question

Do people speak English?

Answer

In general the English level is lower although you should not have a problem ordering food, drinks or asking basic questions in English as Madrid is a pretty touristy city. Younger people tend to have a higher level of English and Google Translate comes in handy too.

Question

What part of the city should I stay in?

Answer

I recommend anywhere in the main city center: La Latina, Sol, Opera, Justicia, Atocha, Barrio de las Letras, Retiro, Salamanca, or Chamberí for example. For any detailed questions, please let me know.

Question

How will transport to and from the wedding work

Answer

We plan to hire a shuttle service to pick up guests near the Atocha train station, and drop off in the same area at the end of the reception. If you are running late or need to leave the venue early, we can always call you a taxi or an Uber.
