How We Met

Awkward Beginnings

Adam and Chelsea met online in the Summer of 2012, just before Tinder was even a thing. Their online courtship blossomed over several wordy messages, and then Adam asked Chelsea out for real. They met in person at a coffee house in Plymouth, where Adam nearly met Chelsea's parents as they accidentally ambushed them. Thankfully, Adam decided that it would be the perfect time to refill his coffee. Even after this nearly horrifying event, they found themselves so enraptured by their conversation that they were surprised when the coffee shop finally closed down, seven and a half hours later. At the end of the night, Chelsea sent Adam off with the most awkward wave imaginable, and somehow, they continued to see each other. They continued their summer romance into the Fall and beyond, and Adam frequently visited Chelsea throughout her last two years at Alma College.

The Proposal

The Climb of a Lifetime

Adam and Chelsea's first big international trip was to Japan, where Adam had studied in High School and College. They decided to return for Adam's 30th birthday, and Chelsea had an idea that they would be celebrating two events on the trip. Everyone had predicted that Adam would propose on the top of Mt. Fuji. Their plan was to "bullet" climb the mountain and arrive at its summit right as the sun rose over a beautiful view of Japan. With a scene like that, how could he not? The trek up Mt. Fuji was everything they had hoped for and more. The views were spectacular and the climb was a breeze, so when they reached the second stop before the top, Adam transferred the ring from his backpack into his pocket. However, the weather had other plans. Immediately following the ring transfer, dark clouds rolled in and opened up, pouring icy rain down on the climbers. Wind whipped them around, nearly knocking Chelsea over during the final few hours of the climb. It was at this point that Chelsea thought to herself, "Huh. I guess I am afraid of heights". Nonetheless, they reached the summit at what would have been the most perfect time to see the sun rise. Alas, they couldn't see the sun through the thick clouds. "Oh well", Adam thought. "Maybe I can propose at the bottom!" On the equally arduous trip down the mountain, Chelsea took a trip to the bathroom, where she removed her gloves only to find that her fingers had swollen up and turned blue!! So, there would be no proposal on Mt. Fuji after all. Adam held onto the ring until they reached their ryokan in Hakone, a town known for its hot springs and romantic sights. After freshening up and having a beautiful meal, Adam got down on one knee and asked Chelsea to spend her life with him. Chelsea immediately began wedding planning during the next long train ride.
