This is our go-to when we are home for a good black coffee and a breakfast burrito. They serve Wisconsin roasted coffee. Our favorite for a small, simple breakfast with a low-key coffee shop environment.
A local downtown institution has been known around for over a hundred years. When we ask where we should go for a breakfast or lunch diner experience, the answer is usually the Mint.
Very tasty breakfast food. Their menu ranges from straight classics to things with a bit more flourish. The last time we went here with Eric's grandma, she got raspberry cheesecake pancakes that came with actual cheesecake bites. Might want to get there early, it can get quite busy.
Lovely laid back restaurant with a focus on locally-sourced ingredients and unique flavors. The wood fire pizza is some of our favorite.
Super tasty asian fusion, primarily leaning Thai. Highly recommend the curry, but really you can't go wrong. This is located downtown and lends to a nice meander down main street afterward to digest this tasty meal.
Returning to Wausau during trips in grad school, we were shocked to find some pretty tasty Mexican food, including La Taqueria. We love going here when we now go home to visit family. Everything is delicious, but we tend to gravitate toward the California burrito with steak.
Are you looking for an authentic Wisconsin culinary experience? Look no further than the Trail's End Lodge for a fish fry on Friday evening. Be sure to order a side of cheese curds and if you would like a beer, anything from New Glarus is a good choice. Sit on the back porch and take in the passing Rib River while you wait for your food to come.
This is a classic soft serve ice cream establishment in the Wausau area. E&T went on their first date here. Highly recommend! Eric says get a Brownie Briq Mountain or Oreo Speedwagon and Teresa says peanut butter pie crust sundae! If those aren't tickling your fancy, you can challenge yourself to eating a 1lb cone.
For those of you not from the Midwest, Culver's is a cultural beacon. At this point in our lives, our bodies are probably 85% Butterburgers and custard. If you find time this weekend, we encourage you to eat the food of our people.
This is a lovely art museum in town with an awesome little sculpture garden. It is tucked into a historic neighborhood in Wausau so enjoy looking around at the architecture on your way there.
E&T love the Wausau Farmer's Market. You can find fantastic fruits/veggies, floral bouquets, breakfast, and great snacks on Saturday morning. Our go-to breakfast is a full to-go container of freshly made egg rolls from one stand and a hot, freshly roasted black coffee from another stand. Go find your own fun combination! We recommend gathering your goodies and then walking the paved trail that is alongside the river, following it up toward the whitewater kayaking course in downtown.
While growing up, E&T both spent a lot of time at Rib Mountain on field trips or hiking. Eric did his Eagle Scout project as an educational tool for the state park (now rendered obsolete... a tree fell through it). There's a great view of Wausau from the tower and nice hiking trails to pass the time.
This is a more recent hiking development in Wausau. These are some great trail loops with nice little view points through the woods beside the state park.
