FAQs

Question

What to wear to the wedding

Answer

Semi-formal attire is recommended, but wear what makes you comfortable. Qaspeqs are always welcome.

Question

But beyond the wedding - what should I wear?

Answer

Anchorage is lovely in July with temperatures likely in the mid-60s or 70s. Lots of sun, always a chance of rain. Consider a sweater, a light jacket, some shoes you're not afraid to get dirty. Where else can you wear sunglasses until midnight?

Question

Is Anchorage Walkable?

Answer

Downtown Anchorage is very walkable. However, you'll find that much of Alaska's biggest "city" resembles something more like a suburb. If you are looking to spend time exploring Anchorage and the surrounding areas, we recommend a rental car. Anchorage has a reputable taxi network (907-222-2222) alongside Uber, Lyft, and Turo.

Question

How can I see the northern lights?

Answer

While it's likely that the Anchorage area may experience aurora activity in July, but it will almost certainly be invisible in the extended daylight. Remember, the sun is not expected to set until almost 11:00 pm in July. Come back in the dark months - we'll be here!

Question

Can I see Denali from Anchorage?

Answer

Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America, is visible from Anchorage on very clear days. Common places to see it are Earthquake Park, Glen Alps Trailhead, and the top of the 5th Avenue Parking Garage downtown. About two hours north of Anchorage is the town of Talkeetna which serves as base camp for ambitious adventurers seeking to summit the peak and has (of course) great views.

Question

Wildlife precautions

Answer

Alaska has world class hiking, climbing, four-wheeling, and hunting. If your schedule allows we recommend everyone get outdoors. That being said, it's important to remember wildlife safety. If you see a moose in town please admire from a distance. While you are unlikely to encounter a bear in town, they do live in the woods and will be active in July. Practice bear safety. Don't hike alone. Consider leaving behind smellables and carrying bear spray. You can purchase bear spray all over town at places like REI, Cabela's, or Costco. Alaska Pacific University also rents cannisters. You cannot carry on or check bear spray, though, so leave it here!
