Flight
We recommend flying into Marseille Provence airport or flying in to Paris and taking the train from Paris to Avignon. Paris - Those flying into Paris can catch a high speed train (the "TGV") from Paris Gare de Lyon station or directly from Charles de Gaulle airport to Avignon TGV. For more information on the train to Avignon, see "Trains." Marseille - A 1-hour drive to Avignon, Marseille is the closest major airport. Nice - A 2.5-hour drive from Avignon, the Nice airport is a great option if you're considering taking on a few days on the French Riviera before or after the wedding!
Train
Taking the TGV (high speed train) is the best way to get from Paris to Provence and back. It's extremely convenient, since you can get on the train from Paris Gare de Lyon station or directly from Charles de Gaulle airport and get off at the Avignon TGV train station. Depending on which train you take, the journey takes 2.5-3.5 hours. A few tips: 1) Purchase tickets well in advance 2) Leave at least 1.5 hours between your flight arrival time and your train 3) If the price difference between a 1st and 2nd class ticket is small, get the 1st class ticket 4) Buy tickets from Trainline or the SNCF website. 5) Make sure to book the high speed TGV train to "Avignon TGV" station
Travel Note
Renting a car couldn't be easier. There are plenty of car rental options from the airports and from Avignon TGV station. Driving is simple even if you don't speak french. Here are a few tips: 1) Cell signal can be weak in some areas. Add GPS with your car rental or download your Google Map area for offline navigation. 2) If you plan to travel by highway, make sure to bring coins in your car for highway tolls (some do not take Amex). If you're only exploring the countryside of Provence, this shouldn't be an issue.
